One thing to recognize is that client’s hire recruiters. There is a perception that if you get involved with a recruiter, there is a premium on your head in terms of what you cost to the firm. This is not correct. A firm has already committed to hiring a third party to do the legwork for the recruiting process. They have already budgeted the cost. And so, usurping that process, going direct to the company, could be counterproductive. There are costs involved in any search. The company has done a cost-benefit analysis to recognize that they would rather have a firm manage the ins and outs of a recruit than doing it themselves. Therefore, your value to a company is not discounted because a recruiter is involved. Recruiters deal with many multiples of resumes more than companies over a similar time period of time. A company that has a recruiter involved knows the value we add and appreciate the fee we charge. So worry not about dealing directly with us. We are on the same side. We want you to work there.
Recruiters add value providing both candidates and clients a clear understanding of what the market will bear at a particular point in time. Getting your resume to a recruiter may have value, but you need to treat the process appropriately.
Recruiters like to help people who help them. If you have a healthy relationship with a recruiter, they are more likely to help you out when it comes to remembering your resume and remembering the value that you can bring to their clients.
When submitting your resume to a recruiter, it’s not the end of the transaction; it’s only the beginning. And we would very much suggest that you find ways over the coming days, weeks, months and years to continue thinking about where you can add value to a recruiter’s life. Maybe that is by taking a look at other mandates that are available that you may not be right for, but you may have connections or you have some market intelligence which could help the recruiter close a transaction. They will take that very kindly and think of you on a more regular basis.
