Candidates sit across from me, frustrated with their current employment as they express the need for better work-life balance. I’m here to tell you, there is no such thing. Work-life balance is a fallacy. We assume there is a spectrum – that work competes against life — but life is many things. Work is simply one factor. With one small tweak, the age-old issue can be overcome: “Bill, I need better work-life integration.”
As Stewart D. Friedman says in his recent book Leading the Life You Want: Skills for Integrating Work and Life, “…you need to be real, be whole and be innovative to find work-life integration… people must find ways to integrate the different parts of their lives so that they reinforce and enhance each other…”
