It is very important to know that every meeting you have is an interview. I have asked many candidates how many interviews they’ve had and often they answer with ‘very few’ – they have just gone to some networking events and had some coffees with friends.
The reality is, every time you position your professional brand when it comes to a career move, you’re having an interview. That person is going to possibly represent you down the road to their boss or to their neighbour who’s going to give it to their boss. This initial impression and meeting will help their boss make the decision whether to hire you or not. Therefore, that meeting or coffee is an interview.
Every coffee, every wine and cheese you’ve been to, every time you’ve gone out for dinner with one of your partner’s colleagues and you talk about work, is an interview. You have to think about your professional brand at each of those points.
